Wednesday night's execution of Troy Davis via lethal injection has left everyone in the United States divided. Some believe that Troy Davis was guilty as charged for murdering an off-duty police officer. Others believe that Davis was an innocent man and he, being black was a victim of racial profiling. This blog post isn't a rant on whether Troy Davis was guilty or not guilty or whether the American judicial system is prejudiced against blacks. This post is about how two different opinions concerning Troy Davis created a rift between two Asian American rappers Mondega and Bambu who had previously collaborated together on Mondega's Music for the People back in April. Here's how it went down. 10 Comments A Vietnamese-American woman from Garden Grove, California by the name of Catherine Kieu Becker, chopped off her husband's penis as they were going through divorce proceedings. She was arrested by the police and held on $1 million dollar bail. Here's how it went down (via LA Times): Becker, 48, told police she had drugged her husband’s dinner to make him sleepy, then tied him to the bed. As he awoke, she cut off his penis with a knife, tossed it in the garbage disposal and turned the disposal on. She threw the chopped off penis in the garbage disposal? Daaaaaaaaaamn! Lord have mercy. Becker also has no remorse for chopping off her husband's penis as she reportedly said her husband "deserved it". The Thai election results are in! Thailand's new and first ever female prime minister is Yingluck Shinawatra, the sister of former ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. She is 44 years old and looks pretty good for her age. She kinda has that Avon lady / female executive look going for her (Hellooooooooooo nurse!). Currently, Thailand is divided between the yellow shirts and red shirts. The only thing that is keeping the country together is probably the King of Thailand. Let's hope Yingluck is more than just eye candy, and that she can unite the country and move it forward... More pictures of Yingluck Shinawatra: Today would have been the birthday of a Harlem legend. Lamont Coleman aka Big L was born on May 30th, 1974. He would have been 37 today. Happy birthday Big L! Definitely one of the best that ever did it! To celebrate Big L's birthday, yes, there will be a new Big L album being released today. It's called The Danger Zone. Looks like the album will be remastered tracks from mixtapes that have been circulated for quite some time already or old verses with new instrumentals perhaps? I remember the first time I heard Big L. It was from the Lyricist Lounge 2 compilation album that I heard back in 2002 or 2003. It was on the track Still Here that I first heard L. I was listening to the lyrics and it went like... Snacky Chan and Maniac are now longer part of the (revolving) group Uptown. They both left the group and formed their own crew called New Dynasty. They did a recent interview with TBS eFM 101.3, which is an English radio station in Korea, talking mainly about their experience with the Korean music industry and being in Uptown. From what I gather, it seems like these guys are done with the K-pop idol scene and want to start making music they believe in, hence the formation of New Dynasty. They should be releasing a music video real soon but in the mean time here's an unreleased English track from New Dynasty called You Da Man. Skype will soon be "illegal" in China 12/30/2010
If banning Youtube, Facebook and Twitter isn't enough for China, well-- surprise, surprise! VOIP service provider Skype is the next internet service that will be banned in China. According to the Shanghai Daily, it was reported that: "The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said all VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) phone services are illegal on the Chinese mainland, except those provided by telecommunications carriers China Telecom and China Unicom. The ministry gave no timetable on when the ruling takes effect." That is one helluva way to ensure that both of China's state-owned telecommunications monopolies stay as monopolies. On the other hand, this news might piss off Chinese companies that use Skype to conduct business with other countries. But never fear, I'm pretty sure a "new" Chinese version of Skype will come around. You know how THEY do! Merry Christmas! 12/25/2010
I just want to take this opportunity and wish all the readers of Asian Hip Hop Times a very Merry Christmas! Happy holidays to everyone! MC Jin X Bow Tie - Rap Now 2010 MV 12/19/2010
MC Jin collaborates with Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald "Bow Tie" Tsang to wish everyone in Hong Kong a Merry Christmas. The song is called Rap Now 2010 which is a spin-off of Donald Tsang's controversial "Act Now" campaign for electoral reforms. I couldn't help but notice that the "Act Now" poster in the music video, which has MC Jin's name on it, blending into "Rap Now". I wonder if this is a ploy by Donald Tsang to get MC Jin's fans to align with him politically. You guys remember that Jin's Letter to Obama song was quite the buzz back then, right? Man congratulates Chinese ambassador in Netherlands with flowers for winning Nobel Peace Prize 12/12/2010
Jailed Chinese activist Liu Xiaobo, who wrote about political reforms in China, is this year's Nobel Peace Prize winner. He is the first Chinese to win the prize and more than likely, NOT THE LAST. Because Liu Xiaobo is still serving his 11 year prison sentence in China on "subversion charges", the Nobel committee had an empty chair award ceremony in his honour on December 10th. On the same day of the award ceremony, Bahram Sadeghi from the Netherlands goes to the Chinese embassy and gives flowers to the Chinese ambassador to congratulate China for winning the Nobel Peace Prize. LOLLLLLLL!! What a ballsy move! The guy was trolling the ambassador all the way through! This production by Next Media Animation of "Obama" and "Hu Jintao" having a rap battle over monetary policy is HILARIOUS! The music video was released just in time for the G20 summit in Seoul, Korea. Obviously the G20 summit will be dominated by the rising trade tensions between USA and China. The beauty of the "rap battle" is that it simplifies the arguments between both countries. More importantly, it's quite edgy like most of Next Media Animation's productions. |
