Thought I'd give you guys the heads up about the Asian Hip Hop Times getting press coverage in this Saturday's Denver Post!  The article is about Asian-Americans and hip hop culture and I was asked to share my thoughts on Asian hip hop music.  Shout outs to Elena Jefferson, the writer of the news article, for reaching out and helping to get the word out for this website.  Without any further ado, here's the excerpt from the original article:

"It's interesting how Asian cultures try to legitimize their hip-hop," says Royal, a Malaysia-born music blogger who lives, works and writes in British Columbia. He started his site, Asian Hip-Hop Times (asianhiphoptimes.com), because he says there was a need for more English-language coverage of the subject.
"All over the world," Royal says, "people are doing their own hip-hop."

Look closer, the blogger adds, and each country within Asia has its own take on the art form. Hip-hop in Korea, China and Hong Kong, he says, is more closely tied to American pop music. And then there are Asians outside of Asia who are infusing rap music with whatever cultural references they have, like Asian-Germans who rap in that language. "I have no idea what they're saying," Royal says, "but it's still hip-hop."

There's an Asian-American music community in Los Angeles that takes a page from electronica, and there are Asian-American rappers from the American South whose rhymes reveal a hint of Southern twang.

"Hip-hop started as a black culture," Royal says. "But what you've got to realize now is that hip-hop is international culture."
