In his video he just wants to dispel the common stereotypes about Blasians. Anyways here are some of my thoughts about the points he was making in that video.
Blasian is... Black + ?
The first thing he mentioned is that people often assume about Blasians is that their Asian side is Chinese. Then he says says there are other Asians who have mixed with Blacks such as Japanese, Korean, Thai - and in his case - Filipino. Point taken!
But what about his Black side? What is Black anyways? How come nobody ever questions what is Black? Black isn't an ethnicity. It's a color! When somebody says they are Black, it just stops there? I mean, which part or parts of Africa does your Black side come from?
Blasians have no culture?
The next thing he said was that Blasians have no culture or no foods. I totally get what he means as it pertains to his own experience. And point taken.
I'm not trying to contradict him but... there are actually REAL organic "Blasian cultures" in Madagascar. Take a look at the Malagasy peoples from Madagascar:
These peoples are mixed with Austronesian and East African roots. And yes, they have their own Blasian cultures, so to speak.
I totally understand where the Blasian guy was coming from as he was talking about his own experience being Black and Filipino, but I just wanted to show that there are actual Blasians in Madagascar with their own unique cultures!
Inheriting Black and Asian stereotypes
The last thing he talked about was that just because he is Black and Asian, he said it doesn't mean that he inherits both stereotypes from both sides. The examples he used was that he said he isn't good at basketball and mathematics.
My quibble about his basketball and math example is that although I have heard of the basketball stereotype (as it supposedly means all Blacks are good at basketball), I have never heard of the stereotype that Filipinos are good in math. That is not to say that there are no Filipinos who are good in math. I'm pretty sure there are many Filipinos who are good in math, but that stereotype about Filipinos and math is unheard of.
Filipinos are stereotyped as being good in other things, like singing and dancing. Oops. That's a Black stereotype too isn't it? Ha ha.
