No I'm not going there at all.
Despite what people claim, the stereotype that Chinese men are scrawny and feminine didn't start in America or Europe. The reality is that there is an even older stereotype that goes back for many centuries that the Chinese men who are all scrawny and feminine all come from Southern China.
So according to the old stereotype, the further south you go in China, the more skinny and feminine the men are. The other half of this stereotype is the further northwards you go in China, the more robust and masculine the men are.
So what does this have to do with the Western stereotype about Chinese men? Well it's because the Chinese who established overseas communities are the Southern Chinese. So all the horrible stereotypes you can imagine about Chinese guys that from Hollywood, that they are skinny, scrawny, geeky, weak, feminine etc., is almost exactly how Northerners stereotype Southern Chinese men in China still to this day!
The thing is that most people don't know the difference between Northerners and Southerners. They just assume that Southern Chinese people represents all Chinese people. And that's far from the truth.
To illustrate this point about the stereotypical physical differences between Northerners and Southerners watch this Youtube clip of the movie Ip Man. In this movie clip a Northern Chinese martial artist is challenging Southern Chinese martial artists. It's one of those "my style is better than your style" fights.
I know, I know. The stereotypes are so over-exaggerated that it's funny. Look at how the Northerners look so big, rugged and strong while the Southerners are look so frail, clean cut, and puny. This isn't what Hollywood is telling you. This is what the Chinese media is telling you!
