Happy new years everyone!
How about starting this year with a year in review of 2010?
In 2010 I've seen many music videos from Asian hip hop artists from all over the globe. There were some that I thought that stood out from all the others because they have left an impression in me. Without further ado, here are my top 10 favorite music videos from 2010!
讲者(Prosa) puts it down for their city of Guangzhou, China. This song sounds like Robert Miles meets Chinese night market techno. What appeals to me about this song is that there's a real street feel in the music and in the music video.
This song is so laid-back and chill! And these guys can really flow in Mandarin Chinese. I'm usually not a big fan of hip hop songs about drinking, but this one is done with a touch of class. I really dig the use of color in the music video.
This is a hilarious rap battle between "Obama" and "Hu Jintao" fighting over their currencies. I gotta give props to the voice actor who really sounds like Obama. The 3D animation of Hu Jintao looks more like former Taiwanese president, Chen Shui Bian instead of Hu.
Perfect Storm shows us what's really going down in the "underground side" of Dubai. There's some really nice camera work in the music video. You might be familiar with the sample being used. It's from Bootsy Collins's Munchies For Your Love, the same sample used in the original version of Tupac and Biggie's Runnin.
Go Hard was the debut music video from 454 Life Entertainment and they went all out with the exotic cars, the women, the expensive drinks and the yacht. This just might be the most expensive Asian-American hip hop music video yet. My only gripes about this production is Nump's verse. It didn't seem to fit with the subject mater.
I like this song, but the rapping from Manchuker is a lil bit off. It's not bad, but it's not on point. They should have slowed down the instrumental a bit to make easier to rap on. The visuals on the other hand, is really good. And so are the girls! This is the best Taiwanese hip hop video I've seen yet. It has a dance kinda feel to it.
Humble The Poet from Toronto, Canada is one of the illest rappers that I've discovered in 2010. He's a Punjabi spoken word artist/rapper who puts out really good music. In this one he lets loose in a song that reps the Punjabi people. And what better way to let loose than in a Punjabi wedding?
This music video kicks ass, specially with the Filipino stick fighting and martial arts. Two of the dopest Filipino rappers from the west coast, Bambu and Prometheus Brown are spittin real hard in this one. This is FIRE!
This song was a free release from Los Angeles Korean rapper IZ to kick 2010 off with a bang! Everything's tight about this song: the production, the lyrics and the visuals. My favorite song Asian-American rap song of 2010! (download here)
Ladies and gentleman, my favorite music video from 2010! This is a collaboration of Thai hip hop trio Thaitanium with Add Carabao, who is like the Willie Nelson of Thailand. The song itself is really good and inspirational in nature, and man--what a breath-taking music video! They even brought out an orchestra and had the fireworks in the end.
