I get a lot of emails regularly from "Asian rappers" asking me if I can post their music to help them get some exposure. The email usually goes something like:
HI! I like your blog blah, blah, blah. I am a Filipino or Korean rapper from ________. I have been rapping for about X number of years. I'm here to represent Asians/my people. Can you please post my music videos and check out my songs, blah blah blah blah.
(disclaimer: I am not picking on Filipinos or Koreans but they have emailed me the most. Also, I'd like to point out that Filipinos and Koreans, out of all Asians are the most active in hip hop culture.)
Here's what I typically see in their music videos:
- some guy wearing a fitted cap and urban looking clothing
- some guy blowing smoke off his joint or cigar
- some guy rapping behind graffiti
- some guy rapping in front of or behind fences (lol)
- guys doing the hand shake-turning-into hug etc
- throwing wearing bandanas and throwing up "gang signs" etc.
And about their music. Some of their music is alright, some of it is so-so and some of it is pretty shitty to be honest. It really annoys me to the nth degree that these guys say they are "Asian rappers" but there are absolutely no identifiable Asian elements in their music.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that they are bad rappers. I'm saying that their music has nothing to do with them being an Asian rappers in the first place. None. Zip. Zilch. I keep asking myself, what the hell is so Asian about this? And I can't find anything.
I hate the fact that they spam me the Asian rapper label when their ethnicity has nothing to do with their style of music. How are you exactly "representing your community" again?
The days of 106 and Park when Jin was blowing up and when people thought Asian rappers were a freak of nature, those days are long gone! It's quite generally acceptable that Asians rap. However, I really think that these so-called "Asian rappers" are culturally docile.
And uhhhhhh happy 2013 :)
